A few days ago I had a fantastic and productive meeting with our costume designer, Martha Shaw, and fellow producer Rachel Adams, about the costumes for Aria Starlight. There’s nothing like sitting around a table together with drawing paper and pencils, putting our ideas down as rough sketches. Martha had some terrific mood boards, which really helped, and we concentrated mostly on the fantasy costumes. We decided that the Murmurer (our dark antagonist) is represented by the element of earth, with inspirations coming from photos of various fungi, with their veins, knobbly caps and reds browns and greys. This gave us some clear ideas for his colour palette and textures. For the mystical Hester, Martha suggested ‘sunlight hitting water’, which brought its own, distinctive palette. Melody, our little hero, we decided would have dressed herself that day, so there may be an interesting mix of styles! For everyone else, we put some thought into each sequence’s colour and tone, so we’ll be giving clear instruction on the colours for our supporting cast and background artists.
